The Economics of Illicit Drugs
By Dr. Ezekiel Nichols
Introduction
This is where I am organizing my thoughts on a fictional novel, a story I made up about medical doctors, lawyers and financial industry professionals all involved in the illegal drug trade and the outcome of their activities. I will discuss my own theories on illegal drugs, what markets look like, game theory and generally hold a discourse on illegal drugs within a story framework because as economists we tell stories. Finally, I have the transcript of 2012-892 I'll post it after I finish this project.
It takes place at University All-Good (UA). And UA has quite a drug problem with a culture of elite white fraternities and sororities that fuel a culture based around partying and football. UA is located in Topville in the state of All-Good which everybody calls Ttown.
Our protagonist is Dr. Isiah McBride a struggling graduate student in economics with a major drug problem that he eventually kicks only to have his former associates ruthlessly attack him because he put an end to their illegal shenanigans. Isiah did it in the softest way possible to end it and he did in fact talk to undercover narcotics officers about making illegal drug buys from the professionals as a wired informant before he acted but he didn't want that much damage done to them he just wanted all the illegal drug activity around him stopped because he had a terrible drug habit and was struggling to get out of grad school. The attorneys were remorseless in their attack on him, having him arrested, discrediting him, attempting to put him in a mental institution, getting him suspended from the university and harassing his parents. In the end Isiah graduates and goes on to become a published illegal drug researcher with a beautiful wife, a successful career and fulfilling home life. What was this group of professionals involved with that they felt the need to attempt to take his freedom and have him labeled insane? What were the circumstances surrounding McBride's life that lead to all the turmoil? Will Isiah flourish after grad school?
Isiah and The Professionals
Isiah and The Professionals weren't just drug users they were involved with drug trafficking, mostly to supply their personal habits but profit was never out of the question. The Professionals and Isiah traded large quantities of prescription pills, marijuana, ecstasy, LSD and cocaine mainly among themselves in a tight knit group that revolved around one particular attorney's party scene, Dr. Walter Weir. Dr. Walter Weir was a joint JD, PHD in economics at UA has a wife that was a medical doctor and was well liked by everybody. Make no mistake what they were doing was extremely illegal but the chances of getting caught in such a tight group of white-collar professionals is slim to none. Nobody takes the risk of trading with people outside of the network and on the off chance somebody does get caught with drugs they know they can lawyer up and in a worst-case scenario go to drug court and have the felony charges dismissed and one unfortunate J.D. student a couple of years ahead of Dr. Walter Weir did just that.
